A letter to the Chronicle , postmarked May 8, , featured a complaint that the movie Badlands was "murder-glorification" and asked the paper to cut its advertisements.

Signed only "A citizen", the handwriting, tone, and surface irony were all similar to earlier Zodiac communications. The letter was signed "the Red Phantom red with rage ".

The Zodiac's authorship of this letter is debated. A letter, dated April 24, , was initially deemed authentic, but was declared a hoax less than three months later by three experts.

Dave Toschi, the SFPD homicide detective who had worked the case since the Stine murder, was thought to have forged the letter, because author Armistead Maupin believed the letter to be similar to "fan mail" he received in which he believed was authored by Toschi.

While he admitted to writing the fan mail, Toschi denied forging the Zodiac letter and was eventually cleared of any charges. The authenticity of this letter remains unverified.

On March 3, , an American Greetings Christmas card sent to the Chronicle , postmarked in Eureka had recently been discovered in their photo files by editorial assistant Daniel King.

Postal keys on a magnet keychain. The handwriting on the envelope resembles Zodiac's print, but was declared inauthentic by forensic document examiner Lloyd Cunningham.

However, not all Zodiac experts agree with Cunningham's analysis. The card itself is unmarked. The Chronicle turned over all the material to the Vallejo Police Department for further analysis.

In April , the SFPD marked the case "inactive", citing caseload pressure and resource demands, effectively closing the case.

The case is open in Napa County [75] and in the city of Riverside. In May , the Vallejo Police Department announced their intention to attempt to collect the Zodiac Killer's DNA from the back of stamps he used during his correspondence.

In May , a Vallejo police detective said that results were expected in several weeks. However, to date, no results have been reported.

Robert Graysmith 's book Zodiac advanced Arthur Leigh Allen as a potential suspect based on circumstantial evidence.

Allen had been interviewed by police from the early days of the Zodiac investigations and was the subject of several search warrants over a year period.

In Graysmith noted that several police detectives described Allen as the most likely suspect. Allen had been reported in the vicinity of the Lake Berryessa attack against Hartnell and Shepard on September 27, ; he described himself scuba diving at Salt Point on the day of the attacks.

According to Cheney, this conversation occurred no later than January 1, Jack Mulanax of the Vallejo Police Department subsequently wrote Allen had received an other than honorable discharge from the US Navy in , and had been fired from his job as an elementary school teacher in March after allegations of sexual misconduct with students.

He was generally well-regarded by those who knew him, but he was also described as fixated on young children and angry at women. He apparently never had a girlfriend or wife.

In September , San Francisco police obtained a search warrant for Allen's residence. Vallejo police served another search warrant at Allen's residence in February Other evidence existed against Allen, albeit entirely circumstantial.

A letter sent to the Riverside Police Department from Bates's killer was typed with a Royal typewriter with an Elite type , the same brand found during the February search of Allen's residence.

He owned and wore a Zodiac brand wristwatch. He lived in Vallejo and worked minutes away from where one of the Zodiac victims Ferrin lived and from where one of the killings took place.

Since neither test result indicated a match, Allen and Cheney were excluded as the contributors of the DNA. Retired police handwriting expert Lloyd Cunningham, who worked on the Zodiac case for decades, added "they gave me banana boxes full of Allen's writing, and none of his writing even came close to the Zodiac.

Does his job keep him close to home? I would speculate he maybe has a menial job, is well thought of and blends into the crowd I think he's quite intelligent and better educated than someone who misspells words as frequently as he does in his letters.

June 2, Police were disappointed that the code did not contain the killer's identity. Some believe the letters can be rearranged and three more letters added to spell "Robert Emmet the Hippie.

A man carrying a semi-automatic pistol and wearing a hooded costume approached them. He said he was an escaped convict from a Montana prison, where he had killed a guard and stolen a car, and that he wanted money and their car to drive to Mexico.

The couple cooperated fully with his demands while offering him money and the car keys. The man instructed Shepard to hog-tie Hartnell with pieces of a clothesline that he supplied.

Leaving the couple for dead, he walked back to Hartnell's car. He drew a crossed-circle symbol on the side of the car and the dates of the attacks in Vallejo.

Both victims were alive, but it took over an hour for medical help to arrive. Shepard died two days later; Hartnell survived and gave police a detailed account of the events and a description of the attacker.

At p. As in the Vallejo case, the call was traced to a phone booth blocks from the police department. There, the passenger shot Stine in the temple, killing him, then removed his wallet and car keys and carefully tore off a large portion of his shirt.

Three youngsters witnessed the event from a second-floor window. Police immediately launched an intensive manhunt, but the killer was mistakenly described as a Black male.

It was later determined that police drove by a man fitting the original description blocks from the shooting, but because of the mistake he was not considered a suspect.

On October 14, the Chronicle received another letter from the Zodiac. The writer referred to the Stine murder, saying the police did not search the area properly, and pointed to his next intended victims: school children.

On October 22, a caller identifying himself as the Zodiac contacted the Oakland Police Department and demanded on-air time on the Jim Dunbar television talk show with F.

Lee Bailey or Melvin Belli, famous defense lawyers. Belli appeared on the show, and a call purportedly from the Zodiac came in.

He said his real name was Sam and asked that Belli meet him in Daly City. Belli agreed but the caller never showed. On November 8 and 9, the Chronicle received a letter from the Zodiac each day.

The first was a character cipher. The second included another piece of Stine's shirt; a seven-page letter claiming police had stopped and talked with him three minutes after he shot Stine; and a schematic drawing of his "death machine," which was made to blow up large objects such as buses.

On December 20, Belli received a Christmas card from the Zodiac at his home that included another piece of Stine's shirt and the claim that he wanted help from Belli, ending with:.

Belli attempted to get the Zodiac to contact him again, but nothing happened. Some speculate that the card was written during a moment of clarity, while others believe it was another attention-getting hoax by the Zodiac.

On the evening of March 22, , Kathleen Johns, who was eight months pregnant, was on her way to meet her mother.

She had her month-old daughter in the back seat of her car. While on Highway in San Joaquin County, west of Modesto, Johns pulled over after a driver came up alongside her and indicated that something was wrong with her car.

The driver pulled over and told Johns that her wheel was wobbling. He said he would tighten the wheel bolts but instead loosened them, returned to his car, and drove off.

When Johns began to pull away, her wheel fell off. The man in the car was not far ahead. He backed up and offered Johns a ride to a gas station.

The ride took over three hours of what Johns described as, "silent, aimless driving around. Johns fled across a field and hid until she saw the man drive away.

A passer-by took her to the police department in Paterson. Her car was later found gutted and burned. Over the years Johns' account of the night's events changed from her original statement, leading some to question her story.

It was the last time anyone reported seeing the Zodiac. On April 20 the Zodiac sent a letter to the Chronicle including a character cipher, a diagram of a bomb he planned to use on a school bus, and a statement that he was not responsible for the February 18, , bombing of a police station in San Francisco.

Authorities interpreted the number 10 as a body count. On the back of the card, the writer threatened to use his bus bomb if the Chronicle failed to publish the April 20 letter that he had sent detailing his plans to blow up a school bus.

He also requested that people begin wearing Zodiac buttons. The author said he was upset that he had not seen people wearing Zodiac buttons.

Investigators suspected it was the shooting death of Sgt. Richard Radetich a week earlier. Also included was a map of the Bay area.

A clock-like face had been drawn around Mount Diablo with a zero at the top, the number three on the right side, six on the bottom, and a nine on the left side.

He took steps to ensure messages were widely shared, such as threatening to go on a "kill rampage" unless a cipher was printed in the San Francisco Chronicle , then issuing a separate threat to have a cipher published in The San Francisco Examiner.

In a letter postmarked November 9, , he taunted his pursuers, saying, "The police shall never catch me, because I have been too clever for them. Of Zodiac's four coded messages, a married couple was able solve the first cipher to reveal that Zodiac had written , among other things, "I like killing people because it is so much fun.

Yet despite decades of trying, no other Zodiac cipher has been officially solved. The letter Zodiac sent taking responsibility for Stine's murder also declared, "School children make nice targets.

I think I shall wipe out a school bus some morning. Some parents opted to keep their children home from school entirely.

In , Zodiac was consistently front-page news, while the knowledge that an unhinged serial killer was on the loose terrified the public.

People rushed to call tip lines with the slightest information, overwhelming the police. Among letters that came in were threats to bomb a school bus and orders for residents of San Francisco to wear buttons with the crosshairs Zodiac symbol.

Zodiac letters and notes, including one declaring that each new victim meant "the more slaves I will collect for my afterlife," arrived until March A few more letters and postcards arrived that year.

There was silence again until when a letter purportedly from Zodiac was sent to the San Francisco Chronicle. However, the legitimacy of the letter was questioned, as the handwriting and tone differed from earlier Zodiac communications.

In addition, the discovery that year that a San Francisco detective had faked letters to the editor praising his own work on the case made some wonder if the detective had also falsified this Zodiac letter, something the detective and San Francisco police denied.

The authenticity of the letter has not been confirmed. Though he'd claimed to be responsible for 37 deaths, no Zodiac victims have been discovered since Did he stop killing?

Popular culture often depicts serial killers as operating under irresistible compulsions, but under certain circumstances, they can refrain from murder.

Perhaps coming so close to getting caught on the night of Stine's murder scared Zodiac onto a safer path. Another possibility is that the terror he fomented in the public served as a substitute for killing.

In addition, simply growing older may dampen predatory impulses. A psychology professor who wrote a book about Zodiac has posited that the murderer may have recovered from dissociative identity disorder, otherwise known as multiple personalities.

With recovery came an end to his desire to kill. It's also possible Zodiac stopped taking lives for a reason outside his control, such as institutionalization, incarceration or his own death.

Or perhaps Zodiac continued to hunt victims, but in a different way. Both members of law enforcement and amateur sleuths continue to track the Zodiac Killer.

Their work relies on the original investigations handled separately by law enforcement in Vallejo, Napa County and San Francisco. The case was not under federal jurisdiction, though the FBI provided support for analyzing handwriting, fingerprints and decoding Zodiac's messages.
